Currently accepting applications for the Summer Cohort 2023 -- DEADLINE: June 8
Applications are now being accepted for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Faculty Cohort Program for the Summer 2023.
As part of this multidisciplinary cohort, faculty will focus on developing an effective partnership and pedagogical design for their COILed course. Faculty from all fields, regardless if they have a partner abroad already or not, are encouraged to apply.
In three synchronous meetings, elective webinars and self-directed work on the COIL Canvas site, cohort members identify learning outcomes for their COILed course; expand their teaching strategies and assessments; become aware of a variety of available digital tools; strengthen their communication with their international partner abroad; have access to elective topics relative to their content course; and more.
Upon completion of the program, participants are eligible to receive $500 per faculty.
Faculty members from all five University of Minnesota campuses are encouraged to apply. Completed applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on June 8, 2023.

This past several semesters we ran COIL Cohorts with approximately ten faculty from across system campuses. The format of the cohorts has changed from year to year, with some sessions taking place online and others in person. Throughout the semester we worked with international partners, some of whom have joined the cohorts, to collaboratively plan the details of their COIL projects. Other earlier past events include:

Lynn Goerdt and Michelle Robertson reviewed their work and the recent conference presentation they gave together with Dan Nolan.
Melissa Falldin and Treden Wagoner worked with faculty on UMD’s campus to review pedagogical approaches to COIL projects, including:
- How to co-develop syllabuses that target cross cultural awareness?
- How to find, establish and formalize relationships with partner institutions?
- How to design collaborative activities?
- How to leverage technology during COIL courses and potential troubleshooting solutions?
The workshop included introductory presentations and hands-on exercises for faculty to begin and continue developing on-going COIL projects.
